Marriage encouraged
Hadrat 'Abdallah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) reported Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) as saying, "Young
men, those of you who can support a wife should marry, for it keeps you from looking at strange women and preserves you from immorality but those who cannot, should devote themselves to fasting, for it is a means of suppressing sexual desire." (Bukhari and Muslim)
Marry the pious
Hadrat Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him) reported Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) as saying, "A woman may be married for four reasons; for her property, her rank, her beauty and her religion, so get the one who is religious and prosper." (Bukhari and Muslim)
Virtues of a good wife
Hadrat Abu Umama (may Allah be pleased with him) said that Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) used to say, "After fear of Allah, a believer gains nothing better for himself than a good wife who obeys him if he gives her a command, pleases him if he looks at her, is true to him if he adjures her to do something and is sincere towards him regarding her person and his property if he is absent." (ibn Majah)
Marriage fulfils half of the religion
Hadrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) as saying, "When a man marries, he has fulfilled half of the religion; so let him fear Allah regarding the remaining half." (Bayhaqi)
Have a look at the girl
Narrated Hadrat Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him): Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) said: "Before proposing marriage to any woman, one should have a look at her if possible." (Abu Dawud)
Accept good proposals
Hadrat Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him) reported Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) as saying, "When someone with whose religion and character you are satisfied asks your daughter in marriage, accede to his request. If you do not do so there will be temptation in the earth and extensive corruption". (Tirmidhi)
Wali Essential
Hadrat Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) reported Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) as saying, "There is no marriage without a guardian". (Ahmad, Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, ibn Majah and Darimi)
Consent Essential
Hadrat ibn'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said that a virgin came to Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) and said that her father had married her against her will, so the Prophet (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) allowed her to exercise her choice. (Abu Dawud)
Mahr
Narrated Hadrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him): Hadrat 'AbdulRahman ibn 'Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) got married and gave his wife gold equal to the weight of a date stone (as Mahr). When Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) noticed the signs of cheerfulness of the marriage (on his face) and asked him about it he said, "I have married and given (my wife) gold equal to a date stone in weight (as Mahr)". (Bukhari)
Narrated Hadrat Sahl bin Sa'd: A woman presented herself to Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) (for marriage). A man said to him, "O Allah's Apostle! (if you are not in need of her) marry her to me." The Prophet (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) said (to him), "What have you got?" The man said, "I have nothing". The Prophet (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) said (to him), "Go and search (for something) even if it were an iron ring." The man went and returned saying, "No, I have not found anything, not even an iron ring, but this is my waist sheet and half of it is for her". He had no Rida (upper garment). The Prophet (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) said, "What will she do with your waist sheet? If you wear it, she will have nothing over her and if she wears it, you will have nothing over you." So the man sat down and when he had sat a long time, he got up (to leave). When the Prophet (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) saw him (leaving), he called him back, or the man was called (to him) and he said to the man, "How much of the Qur'an do you know (by heart)?" "I know such and such suras (by heart)", said the man naming the suras. The Prophet (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) said, "I have married her to you for what you know of the Qur'an". (Bukhari)
The Walimah
Hadrat 'Abdullah ibn'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) as saying, "When one of you is invited to a wedding feast, he must attend it." (Bukhari and Muslim)
Amusement during the marriage ceremonyNarrated mother of faithful believers Sayyidatina 'Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that she prepared a lady for a man from the Ansar as his bride and the Prophet (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) said, "O 'Aisha! Haven't you got any amusement (during the marriage ceremony) as the Ansar like amusement?" (Bukhari)
Extravagance discouraged
Narrated Sayyidatina 'Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that Allah's Prophetic Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) said; "Blessed is the marriage which does not entail much expenditure." (Bayhaqi)
The Rights of the Wife
Narrated Hadrat 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr ibn Al 'Aas (may Allah be pleased with him): Allah's Prophetic Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) said, "O 'Abdullah! Have I not been informed that I have to fast all the day and stand up in prayer all night?" I said, "Yes, O Allah's Messenger." He said, "Do not do that. Observe the fast sometimes and also leave them (the fast) at other times; stand up for the prayer at night and also sleep at night. Your body has a right over you, your eyes have a right over you and your wife has a right over you." (Bukhari)
Behave best towards wives
Hadrat Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) said: The most perfect Muslim in the matter of faith is one who has an excellent behaviour; and the best among you are those who behave best towards their wives. (Tirmidhi)
Virtuous wives are the best
Hadrat 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr ibn al-'Aas (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be up upon him) said: "The whole world is a place of useful things and the best thing of this world is a virtuous woman (wife)." (Muslim)
The rights of the husband
Hadrat Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) said: "When the husband calls his wife to his bed and she disobeys, and he spends the night in anger against her, the angels keep cursing her till the morning." (Bukhari and Muslim)
Hadrat Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) said: "A woman should not observe an optional fast when her husband is present at home, except with his permission. She should also not permit anyone to enter his house without his consent". (Bukhari and Muslim, wording is of Bukhari)
Please the husbandHadrat Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) relates that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) said: "If a woman dies while her husband was pleased with her, she will enter Paradise". (Tirmidhi)
Preserve chastity
Hadrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah's Prophetic Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) as saying, "When a woman observes the five times of prayer, fasts during Ramadan, preserves her chastity and obeys her husband, she may enter by any of the gates of Paradise she wishes." (Abu Nu'aym)
Mahram
Hadrat Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah's Prophetic Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) as saying, "A man must not spend the night in the house of a woman who has been married unless he is a husband or a close relative." (Muslim)
Rights of orphans and women
Hadrat Abu Shuraih Khuwailid ibn Amr Khuza'i (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) said: "O Allah! I declare sinful any failure to safeguard the rights of two weak ones, namely orphans and women". (an-Nasai)
Bear no malice against women
Hadrat Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) said: "Let no Muslim male entertain any malice against a Muslim female. He may dislike one habit in her, but may find another in her which is pleasing". (Muslim)
Equal treatment of wives
Sayyidatina 'Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said that when Allah's Prophetic Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) intended to go on a journey he cast lots among his wives and the one who was chosen by lot went with him. (Bukhari and Muslim)
Muta forbidden
Sayyidina 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said that at the battle of Khaybar, Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) forbade temporary marriage (muta) of women, and eating the flesh of domestic asses. (Bukhari and Muslim)
Divorce allowed but hated
Hadrat Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) reported Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) as saying, "If any woman asks her husband for divorce without some strong reason the odour of Paradise will be forbidden to her". (Ahmad, Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah and Darimi)
Hadrat ibn'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) as saying, "The lawful thing which God hates most is divorce." (Abu Dawud)
Hadrat Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) said that Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) said to him, "O Mua'dh! Allah (the Glorified and the Exalted) has created nothing on the face of the earth dearer to Him than emancipation and Allah (The Glorified and The Exalted) has created nothing on the face of the earth more hateful to Him than divorce". (Daraqutni)
The example of Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him)Hadrat Aswad bin Yazid (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that Sayyidatina 'Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) was asked as to what the Holy Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) did when inside the house. She replied: "He used to remain busy serving and helping the inmates of his house, and when the time for Salah came, he would go out for that". (Bukhari)
It is reported from Hadrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that a woman came to the presence of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) and said: "I wish to tell you something in private". He said: "Go and sit at some road; I will come there and hear you." (Tirmidhi)
It has been narrated on the authority of Hadrat 'Urwa that Sayyidatina 'Aisha (may Allah be pleased with him) described to him the way the Holy Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) took the oath of fealty from women. She said: "Allah's Prophetic Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) never touched a woman with his hand. He would only take vow from her, and when he had taken the (verbal) vow, he would say: "You may go. I have accepted your fealty". (Muslim)
