This phrase, قُرَّةَ أَعۡيُنٍ۬ was used by the Arabs when they were traveling in the desert and were engulfed by a sandstorm. What would happen then, is that sand gets everywhere, and especially in the eyes. You could not see a thing or navigate or do anything. They would call a place of shelter from that قُرَّةَ أَعۡيُنٍ۬ because it gave ‘coolness’ to the eyes, i.e. protection, safety, refuge, peace.
This verse equates this ‘coolness to the eyes’ to what spouses and children mean: as a place of shelter is for a person lost in a sandstorm with the sand clogging his eyes. The dunya with it’s trials is likened to the sandstorm and your spouse and children are your place of refuge from it – the place of rest for your eyes.
