ALCOHOL IN ISLAM
Allah Says (Interpretation of meaning): (O you believe! Intoxicants and gambling, sacrificing to stones, And (divination by) arrows, Are an abomination of Satan's handiwork. Eschew such (abomination), that you may
prosper. Satan's plan is (but) to excite enmity and hatred between you, with intoxicants, And gambling, and hinder you from the remembrance of Allah, and from prayer: Will you not then abstain ?. Obey Allah and obey the Messenger, and beware (of evil). If you do turn back, know you that it is Our Messenger's duty to proclaim (the Message) in the clearest manner). [5:90-92 ].
So, whoever thinks deeply about the meaning of this verse finds several pieces of evidence backing the prohibition of alcohol. Here are some of them:
1 - Allah has linked alcohol to a polytheistic act "sacrificing to stones/idols". When this verse was revealed some Companions of the Prophet Muhammad (Blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said to some other :'Alcohol has been prohibited and was put as a match to polytheism'. I.e. sacrificing to idols.
2 - Allah has described it as "Rijs"and al-Rijs means disgusting filth.
3 - Allah also has described alcohol as part of Satan's handiwork and this is sufficient to restrain any Muslim from drinking it as there is nothing good in Satan's handiwork, in fact, it is all bad.
4 - Alcohol and gambling are stimuli to causing enmity and hatred among people. This is yet another reason to prohibit them as they could cause great damage.
5 - Gambling and drinking alcohol hinder people from remembering Allah and from praying. Such things are undoubtedly Haram (prohibited).
6 - When Allah mentioned all these abominations, He said: "Eschew it".This expression is more significant than just " It is forbidden" as it means,
deliberately avoid doing or using something. So, this last meaning is an order not to approach such a thing, let alone use it.
7 - Allah then says : (Will you not then abstain ?) . This is clearly a threat and a rebuke. That's why Omar Ibn al-Khatab () hurried after hearing this verse and said: 'We have abstained O! Our Lord! We have abstained'.
In the verse that followed, Allah Says (Interpretation of meaning): (Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger), which is an evidence that Muslims should abide by whatever Allah and the Prophet Muhammad (Blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) prescribed to them order to do or prohibitd them from doing. So, Allah Says (Interpretation of meaning): (Eschew it) and says: "Will you then not abstain ?". As for the Sunnah, there are evidence relative to the prohibition of alcohol in particular and all intoxicants in general.
al-Bukhari & Muslim narrated from Aisha () that the Prophet Muhammad (Blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: "Any drink that causes drunkenness is forbidden". Muslim and others narrated from Ibn Omar ( all) that the Prophet Muhammad (Blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: "Any intoxicant is alcohol and every intoxicant is forbidden. Whoever drinks alcohol in This Life and dies addicted to it without repenting, will not drink it on The Last Day".
In other books of Hadith like "Al-Mustadrak", "Al-Musnad", it is narrated from many Companions of the Prophet Muhammad (Blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) that he said: "Allah cursed alcohol. He cursed its distiller, the one it was distilled for, the one who drinks it, the one who carries it, the one to whom it is carried, the one who sells it, the one who consumes its price, the one who buys for it, the one who buys it
