AL-HADITH : HONESTY

1. Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger ( pbuh ) said, "When honesty is lost, then wait for the Hour." It was asked, "How will honesty be lost, O Allah's Messenger ( pbuh
)?" He said, "When authority is given to those who do not deserve it, then wait for the Hour."
(Bukhari)

2. Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet ( pbuh ) said, "Whoever takes the money of the people with the intention of repaying it, Allah will repay it on his behalf, and whoever takes it in order to spoil it, then Allah will spoil him."
(Bukhari)

3. Narrated Buraydah ibn al-Hasib: The Prophet ( pbuh ) said: He who swears by Amanah (faithfulness) is not one of us.
(Sunan Abi Dawood) graded Sahih-Alalbani

4. Narrated Abdulllah ibn Omar that the messenger of Allah ( pbuh ) said: "four (traits) if they were in you then don`t mind what you missed in this life: keeping the trust, truthful talk, good nature(how Allah created him), and acceptance of livelihood" (Graded Sahih - Al-Albani)
(Musnad Ahmad)

5. Narrated Jabir bin `Abdullah Al-Ansari: My father was martyred on the day (of the Ghazwa) of Uhud and left six daughters and some debts to be paid. When the time of plucking the date-fruits came, I went to Allah's Messenger ( pbuh ) and said, "O Allah's Apostle! you know that my father was martyred on Uhud's day and owed much debt, and I wish that the creditors would see you." The Prophet ( pbuh ) said, "Go and collect the various kinds of dates and place them separately in heaps"' I did accordingly and called him. On seeing him, the creditors started claiming their rights pressingly at that time. When the Prophet ( pbuh ) saw how they behaved, he went round the biggest heap for three times and sat over it and said, "Call your companions (i.e. the creditors)." Then he kept on measuring and giving them, till Allah cleared all my father's debts. By Allah, it would have pleased me that Allah would clear the debts of my father even though I had not taken a single date to my sisters. But by Allah, all the heaps were complete, (as they were) and I looked at the heap where Allah's Messenger ( pbuh ) was sitting and noticed as if not a single date had been taken thereof.
(Bukhari)

6. Narrated on the authority of Abu Dzarr who said:
I said to the Prophet ( pbuh ): Messenger of Allah, will you not appoint me to a public office? He stroked my shoulder with his hand and said: Abu Dharr, thou art weak and authority is a trust. and on the Day of judgment it is a cause of humiliation and repentance except for one who fulfils its obligations and (properly) discharges the duties attendant thereon.
(Muslim)

7. Narrated Abu Hurayrah: The Prophet ( pbuh ) said: Pay the deposit to him who deposited it with you, and do not betray him who betrayed you.
(Sunan Abi Dawud,) Graded Sahih by Alhakem and Alalbani.

8. Abu Sirma al-Khudri (Allah he pleased with him ) reported Allah's Messenger ( pbuh ) as saying:
The most important of the trusts in the sight of Allah on the Day of judgment is that a man goes to his wife and she goes to him (and the breach of this trust is) that he should divulge her secret.
(Muslim)

9. Narrated Hudzaifah: Allah's Messenger ( pbuh ) narrated to us two narrations, one of which I have seen (happening) and I am waiting for the other. He narrated that honesty was preserved in the roots of the hearts of men (in the beginning) and then they learnt it (honesty) from the Qur'an,
and then they learnt it from the (Prophet's) Sunna (tradition). He also told us about its disappearance, saying, "A man will go to sleep whereupon honesty will be taken away from his heart, and only its trace will remain, resembling the traces of fire. He then will sleep whereupon the remainder of the honesty will also be taken away (from his heart) and its trace will resemble a blister which is raised over the surface of skin, when an ember touches one's foot; and in fact, this blister does not contain anything. So there will come a day when people will deal in business with each other but there will hardly be any trustworthy persons among them. Then it will be said that in such-and-such a tribe there is such-and-such person who is honest, and a man will be admired for his intelligence, good manners and strength, though indeed he will not have belief equal to a mustard seed in his heart." The narrator added: There came upon me a time when I did not mind dealing with anyone of you, for if he was a Muslim, his religion would prevent him from cheating; and if he was a Christian, his Muslim ruler would prevent him from cheating; but today I cannot deal except with so-and-so and so-and-so.
(Bukhari)
